A number of agreements reached at the small ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organization
Xinhua News Agency, Shanghai, 5 Nov (Reporter Zhang Qianqian and Youzhi)-- the small ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organization (WTO) was held in Shanghai on 5 November. Ministers or representatives of 33 member countries, including the European Union, Russia and India, and more than 200 delegates, including WTO Director-General Azevedo, were invited to attend the meeting. The meeting exchanged views on the outcome design of the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference and WTO reform, and reached a number of agreements.
A number of agreements reached at the meeting included: first, all ministers or representatives of ministers present at the meeting expressed a common voice in support of the multilateral trading system and against unilateralism and protectionism. Support the role of international trade as an engine of economic growth, job creation and sustainable development; Second, it made clear the positive attitude to promote the success of the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference, and all parties called for urgent work on fishery subsidies and other issues. Third, the ministers or representatives of the participating ministers supported the necessary reform of the WTO and called for breaking the deadlock in the selection of members of the Appellate body as soon as possible and promoting the WTO rules to keep pace with the times.
According to the Ministry of Commerce, China hosts a small ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organization (WTO), which aims to build a platform for communication and dialogue among all parties and to work together for the future of the multilateral trading system. China calls on all parties to firmly support the multilateral trading system, resolutely oppose unilateralism and protectionism, actively participate in the necessary reforms of the WTO, safeguard the core values of the WTO, and promote the success of the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference. We will enhance public confidence in the WTO.
In addition, at the ministerial luncheon on investment facilitation held by the Chinese side before the meeting, 92 WTO members, including China and the European Union, jointly issued a joint statement unanimously recognizing the importance of investment facilitation. We will actively support the ongoing discussions on investment facilitation in the WTO. The statement stated that the objective of the work on investment facilitation is to develop a multilateral regulatory framework to create a more transparent, efficient and predictable environment for cross-border investment, and all parties will be committed to achieving concrete results at the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference.
