"We all knew that President Xi would stop in Rhode Island, but we didn't expect him to visit our college. We were very surprised. " In an exclusive interview with Xinhua News Agency in Rhode Island a few days ago, Nikolaus Scurtos, head of the Aegean Sea Institute in Rhode Island, excitedly recalled the unforgettable meeting five years ago.
On July 13, 2014, President Xi Jinping arrived in Rhode Island for a technical stop on his way to Brazil to attend the sixth meeting of BRICS leaders and a state visit to four Latin American countries, where he met with Greek leaders. Greece specially arranged a meeting between the leaders of the two countries to be held at Knight Castle, a World Heritage site in Rhode Island. Accompanied by Greek leaders, Xi Jinping visited the castle and came to the Aegean Academy in the castle.
The Aegean Sea College, fully known as the Aegean Sea College of Law of the Sea and Maritime Law, is a research institution affiliated to the Aegean Sea University. Five years ago, it was Skurtos who accompanied President Xi on his visit to the college. To this day, he can still remember the situation clearly.
"it was a great meeting!" As soon as he met with the reporter, Skurtos excitedly opened the chatterbox.
Skurtos told reporters that he was very excited when he received a call from the mayor of Rhode City and heard that President Xi was about to visit. The Aegean Sea College is about 50 meters from the place where the leaders of the two countries met. He clearly remembers that after the meeting, President Xi walked along the stone road to the college.
"President Xi is very wise, he will listen patiently and respond kindly, he understands very comprehensively, and he has a very deep understanding of our work." He recalled.
Skurtos said: the Aegean Sea College is very honored to welcome President Xi to visit and has expressed its desire to communicate with Chinese academic institutions. President Xi said that China and Greece have ancient marine civilizations and are committed to marine development. It is hoped that the two sides will contribute to the building of an international maritime order of peace, tranquillity and cooperation.
Shortly thereafter, Aegean University established contacts and signed relevant cooperation agreements with universities and research institutions in Qingdao, Xiamen and other places, and more and more Chinese students attended the summer camp of the college. Exchanges between the two sides in the areas of law of the sea and personnel training are increasing day by day.
"the meeting with President Xi was a unique experience of my life." At the end of the interview, Skurtos said endlessly.
