Since 2012, Li Yunhai has led members to plant 18 million sand-fixing and drought-resistant trees Haloxylon ammodendron, 200000 jujube and Populus euphratica in the 32000 mu desert, and interplant Cistanche deserticola in the roots of Haloxylon ammodendron. Chen Hongquan, secretary of the party committee of Tawakule Township, said that at present, the 32000 mu Haloxylon deserticola interplanting Cistanche project in "Cistanche Town" has not only prevented wind and fixed sand, helped 60 farmers to achieve stable poverty alleviation, but also led to 500 seasonal workers during the mining season. Ecological benefits, social benefits and economic benefits are becoming more and more obvious. In the next step, Tawakule Township will organize 200 farmers to go to the "Cistanche Town" for long-term and stable employment, engage in wind prevention and sand control, medicinal herbs planting and processing industries, and rely on the desert highway from Hotan to Alar to develop characteristic medicinal food, desert tourism and other industries. So that "Cistanche Town" has become a veritable characteristic town, helping to get rid of poverty.
The reporter learned from the Hotan area Cistanche Association that Cistanche deserticola is one of the most frequently used Chinese herbs, known as "desert ginseng". By the end of 2018, Hotan area along the edge of the oasis to promote the planting of red willow, Haloxylon ammodendron about 400000 mu, inoculated Cistanche deserticola 300000 mu, of which 100000 mu Cistanche deserticola has produced benefits, with an annual output of more than 5000 tons. Chen Baojun, secretary of the Party Group of the Forest and Grass Bureau of Hotan Prefecture, said: in recent years, Hotan has actively implemented returning farmland to forests, built a green ecological barrier, and actively developed the characteristic forest and fruit industry while ensuring ecological security, turning yellow sand into "gold." At present, the rich walnut, pomegranate, red jujube, Cistanche deserticola and other forest and fruit resources in Hotan area have attracted 120 forest and fruit processing enterprises, with an average employment of more than 300 people. In 2018, farmers and herdsmen in Hotan area earned more than 35 percent of their annual per capita income in the characteristic forest and fruit industry.
