Foreign Ministry spokesman on the outcome of the 11th BRICS leaders' meeting
Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, 15 Nov (Reporter Cheng Xin) Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a regular press conference on 15 November that the 11th meeting of BRICS leaders was successfully held in Brasilia yesterday. The leaders of the five countries had an in-depth exchange of views on BRICS cooperation and major international issues of common concern, reached broad consensus and achieved positive results.
Geng Shuang said that the meeting sent the following clear signal to the outside world:
First, it sends a positive signal to carry forward multilateralism. The core point of multilateralism is that international affairs should be discussed and handled by everyone, not by one country or a few countries. During the meeting, the parties pledged to demonstrate the responsibility of the BRICS countries, take the lead in advocating and practicing multilateralism, and safeguard the international system with the United Nations at its core. We will improve the representation and voice of emerging markets and developing countries in global governance, lead the direction of change in the global governance system, and promote the development of the international order in a more just and equitable direction.
Second, it sends a positive signal against protectionism. The parties reaffirmed that they will uphold the multilateral trading system with the WTO as the core, maintain a fair, just and non-discriminatory business and trade environment, and call on all WTO members to refrain from adopting unilateralist and protectionist measures. Efforts have been made to put development issues at the heart of the global macro policy framework, to help developing countries better integrate into global value chains and industrial chains, and to promote the building of an open world economy.
Third, it conveys a positive signal against external interference. The parties reaffirm that they uphold the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, maintain the international order based on international law, support the independent choice of development paths by all countries, respect each other's sovereignty, oppose external interference, and oppose any violations of international law. It is emphasized that the settlement of disputes through dialogue will play a greater role in maintaining international strategic security and stability.
Fourth, it has conveyed a positive signal for BRICS countries to enhance unity and cooperation. All parties demonstrated the determination of the BRICS countries to unite, cooperate and seek common development, and reaffirmed that they will continue to carry forward the BRICS spirit of openness, inclusiveness and win-win cooperation, enhance the traditional friendship ties among the five countries, and strengthen the BRICS cooperation mechanism. We will promote the in-depth development of "three-wheel drive" cooperation in economic, trade, financial, political and security, and people-to-people exchanges, promote new progress in the BRICS New Industrial Revolution Partnership, and help the five countries achieve high-quality economic development.
Geng Shuang said: the meeting has added stability to the critical international situation, provided a sense of direction for the international system that has undergone profound changes, and injected positive energy into the international community full of anxiety. It has also provided a new impetus for BRICS cooperation. "We look forward to BRICS countries working together from Brasilia to create the second 'Golden decade' and make new and greater contributions to promoting world peace and development and promoting the building of a community with a shared future for mankind."
