It has also produced more than 90 percent of the country's economic crops, effectively ensuring the safety of China's grain and important agricultural products.

This is what the reporter learned at the 60th Anniversary academic Exchange meeting of the farmland Irrigation Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences held in Xinxiang City, Henan Province on the 16th.

Ni Wenjin, deputy director of the Department of Rural Water Conservancy and Hydropower of the Ministry of Water Resources, said at the meeting that at present, the effective irrigation area in the country has reached 1.02 billion mu, and the water-saving irrigation area has reached 540 million mu. In the past 40 years, with the increase of 300 million mu of irrigated area and the continuous improvement of irrigation guarantee rate, the irrigation water consumption has basically not increased, while the total grain output and per capita grain share have reached several levels one after another.

The institute is a state-level scientific research institution specializing in scientific and technological innovation and technical services for farmland irrigation and drainage. It was established in Beijing in 1959 and moved to Xinxiang City, Henan Province in 1963. It is now jointly led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Village and the Ministry of Water Resources.

For more than half a century, agricultural scientific and technological workers, including the farmland Irrigation Research Institute, have created the theory, technology, and new model of water conservancy and soil improvement in the battle for the comprehensive management of drought, flood and saline-alkali in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain. Agricultural water-saving irrigation area accounts for only 45% of the effective irrigation area, and efficient water-saving irrigation techniques such as drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation account for only 13.5% of the effective irrigation area.
