Whether in the towering office buildings in London or in the sprawling business parks on the outskirts of Birmingham, Chinese R & D institutions are taking up more and more office space. In recent years, a number of Chinese enterprises have developed "going to sea" and set up R & D centers in the United Kingdom, an established science and technology power, to actively explore ways to speed up integration into the global market through overseas scientific research.
Xinhua News Agency reporter recently visited China's Changan Automobile Research and Development Center in the UK on the outskirts of Birmingham. After nearly nine years of development, the center has gradually become an organization with R & D capabilities such as conceptual design, engineering development, locomotive integration, simulation analysis and so on. A few days ago, the center also officially opened the power test base, including engine test room, transmission test room, powertrain test room, new energy power system test area, vehicle workshop and so on.
With the continuous strengthening of the R & D strength of Changan Automobile Research and Development Center in the UK, it is also easier to obtain local support in the research and development of cutting-edge technology. "for example, fuel cells, the UK has very advanced technology, and the British government has invested a lot in this area, so we are also working with local technology companies and have applied for a British government project, including financial support." Qiao Jun, chief engineer of strategic planning at the center, told reporters.
The local business community welcomes the investment of Chinese enterprises. Tim Pyle, chairman of the Greater Birmingham and Solihar local business collaboration groups, said: "Changan cars choose to invest in us is very good news, in addition to boosting the local economy, but also to enhance the development of local skilled personnel," said Tim Pyle, chairman of the local business collaboration group in Greater Birmingham and Solihar. At the same time, it will contribute to the growth of the local supply chain and create new job opportunities in the region. "
Huawei of China has also set up a research institute in London in recent years to focus on artificial intelligence technologies, including computer vision, natural language processing, decision-making and reasoning. These technologies can not only be used to enhance the current mobile phone and other products and services, but also conducive to the long-term accumulation of technology.
Yao Jun, director of Huawei's London Research Institute, said in a previous interview with Xinhua that Huawei is gradually building relevant R & D forces in London, focusing on the UK's "closeness to customers" and "closeness to talent."
According to Yao Jun, the Huawei London Research Institute has always adopted an open and developmental attitude, cooperated with local enterprises and academic institutions at different levels, and published some of its research results for use by all walks of life. Such research is not meant to turn the results into corporate products, but to take the basic theory a step further, so it is often discussed online from the beginning of the idea stage, rather than eager to apply for a patent.
The cooperation between Huawei and British universities includes basic science exploration, technology exploration, project research innovation and so on. "in the last aspect, we will try our best to pull it into the specific product; The first two aspects basically belong to the cultivation of basic ability and the acquisition of technical ability, which are generally open to the whole world, so that colleges and universities are also willing to do this. " Yao Jun said.
Huawei has established partnerships with more than 30 universities and research institutes in the UK and plans to increase the number of R & D personnel in the UK to 400 by 2019, according to Huawei. In 2018, the company invested 112 million pounds ($144 million) in research and development in the UK.
As Chinese enterprises enter the global market, the global layout of R & D forces has gradually become an important part of international development. This not only helps to find a better way to integrate technology and human resources, but also closer to the local market, providing important technical support for enterprises to open up the global market.
Qiao Jun said: "We think this is a trend. For example, the automobile industry is a very international industry. In the short term, many enterprises have developed in the big market of China, but in fact, enterprises will have to survive in the competitive environment in the future. You can't just rely on the single market. We have been laying out international development, on the one hand, to develop technology, but also to observe what these markets are like, for example, which market in Europe is suitable for Chang'an, whether we have corresponding products, and so on, but this is also step by step. "
