The Foreign Ministry talks about the slowdown of the growth rate of Chinese students studying in the United States: creating positive conditions for the Cooperation between the two countries in studying abroad
Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, 22 Nov (Reporter Zhu Chao) in response to the slowdown in the growth rate of Chinese students studying in the United States, Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a regular press conference on 22 November that China and the United States should adopt an open and inclusive attitude. To create positive conditions for cooperation between the two countries in studying abroad.
A reporter asked: according to the 2019 US Open doors report released by the American Institute of International Education, China continued to be the largest source of foreign students in the United States from 2018 to 2019, but was affected by visa and other issues. The growth rate of Chinese students studying in the United States has slowed to the lowest rate in a decade. What do you think of this change?
Geng Shuang said that the report mentioned that in 2018-09, not only the growth rate of Chinese students studying in the United States slowed down, but also the growth rate of the overall number of international students in US colleges and universities slowed sharply. This fully shows that some of the policies adopted by the US side over a period of time have obviously affected the image and reputation of the United States, hindered the communication and exchanges between the United States and the outside world, and harmed the interests of the United States itself. It is no wonder that many people in the field of American education have clearly expressed their concerns on this issue.
Geng Shuang said that the exchange of foreign students has always been an important part of people-to-people exchanges between China and the United States. On the 21st, the Chinese Embassy in the United States, in cooperation with the Bureau of Education and Culture of the US State Department, organized the 40th anniversary of studying in the United States and China. Former US President Jimmy Carter sent a congratulatory letter to the event and specifically mentioned that an important issue in the negotiations on the normalization of Sino-US relations is the exchange of foreign students.
He pointed out that over the past 40 years, educational exchanges between China and the United States have developed rapidly. Over the past 40 years, more than 330000 American students have come to study in China. China has become one of the most popular destination countries for American students to study abroad. China has also ranked as the largest source of overseas students in the United States for 10 consecutive years, only in the 2018-2019 academic year. The total number of Chinese students studying in the United States reached 370000, accounting for 1/3 of the total number of international students in the United States. For a long time, the exchanges between the foreign students of the two countries have effectively promoted the communication and mutual understanding between the peoples of the two countries, and played a great role in promoting the development and progress of China and the United States.
Geng Shuang said: today, 40 years later, the two sides should adopt an open and inclusive attitude, create positive conditions for cooperation between the two countries studying abroad, and promote the continuous development of people-to-people exchanges between China and the United States. Us President Donald Trump and senior US officials, including US Ambassador to China Branstad, have also recently repeatedly welcomed Chinese students to study in the United States.
"We hope that the United States will comply with the wishes of the people of the two countries and truly implement the relevant positive statements. We also hope that by this time next year, we will see positive changes in the new annual report." Geng Shuang said.
