The representative of China expounded China's position and contribution on the Yemen issue
Xinhua News Agency, United Nations, 22 Nov (Reporter Xu Xiaolei)-- Zhang Jun, permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, explained China's position on the Yemen issue at the Security Council on 22 November and briefed him on China's contribution to the political settlement of the Yemen issue and the improvement of the humanitarian situation in Yemen.
Zhang Jun said at the Security Council's public meeting on Yemen on the same day that the situation in Yemen shows signs of easing, and the United Nations and regional countries should seize the opportunity to further promote the Yemeni parties to bridge their differences and strive to restart the process of political settlement of the Yemeni issue at an early date. China welcomes the recent formal signing of the Riyadh Agreement between the Yemeni Government and the Transitional Council of the South, and appreciates the positive role played by Saudi Arabia and other relevant parties. The Yemeni parties should refrain from taking actions that escalate tensions and maintain the momentum of a political settlement.
Zhang Jun said that the Stockholm Agreement has played an important role in improving the situation in Hodeida and promoting the political process in Yemen. The Yemeni parties should demonstrate the political will to stop violations of the ceasefire agreement and ensure the full implementation of the Hodeida agreement. The Security Council should continue to maintain unity, firmly support the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Yemen, and provide political support for the diplomatic efforts of the United Nations and the countries in the regions concerned. The ambassadors of the five permanent members of the Security Council to Yemen recently met collectively in Riyadh with the United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffith, and the Chairman of the redeployment Coordination Committee, Abijit Guha, and reiterated their support for their work.
Zhang Jun said that the international community should be targeted to improve the living conditions of the Yemeni people. Emphasis should now be placed on alleviating oil shortages in Yemen, stabilizing currencies and prices, curbing cholera, supporting development and reconstruction projects and increasing employment. China has been providing a great deal of help to the Yemeni people to improve the economic and humanitarian situation in Yemen. China has always believed that development is an effective way to promote peace and stability in countries in conflict. China is willing to continue to do more for the Yemeni people, participate in the economic reconstruction of Yemen, encourage the confidence of the Yemeni people in the future, and play a constructive role in achieving long-term stability in Yemen at an early date.
