China becomes a major contributor to maintaining a global balance of forest cover

The reporter learned from the 2019 Annual report on Global Ecological Environment remote Sensing Monitoring released by the Ministry of Science and Technology on the 22nd that since the beginning of the 21st century, the overall global forest cover area has declined slightly, and the reduction of forest area has been relatively concentrated in less developed countries. China has achieved remarkable results in afforestation and forest protection, and has become a major contributor to maintaining the basic balance of global forest cover.

The report released this time continues to pay attention to the hot issues of the global ecological environment and key areas. Focus on the four topics of "Global forest cover status and change", "Global land degradation situation", "Global major natural disasters and impacts" and "Global situation of bulk grain and oil crop production and food security" to carry out remote sensing monitoring and analysis.

The special report on "Global Forest cover and change" shows that since the beginning of this century, the total (NPP) of global forest net primary productivity has shown a slow downward trend as a whole. The natural causes such as climate change and the disturbance of human activities are the main factors leading to the decrease of NPP. Forest fire is an important factor affecting global forest cover and productivity changes. Central Africa, where forest fires are highly concentrated, should attract global attention.

The thematic report "Global Land degradation Trends" shows that since 2000, large areas of forest degradation have occurred in tropical rain forests such as the Amazon Plain and the Congo Basin. This is mainly related to global warming, El Ni ñ o and other factors caused by successive years of drought, as well as large-scale deforestation, reclamation and frequent fire disturbance and other factors. Among the main traditional degradation regions in the world, the trend of land degradation in China and the South Asian subcontinent has been significantly reversed, which shows that effective policy guidance and active and scientific governance actions can effectively reverse the trend of land degradation.

According to the thematic report "Global Major Natural disasters and impacts", the number of major natural disasters, casualties and property losses in 2018 are all lower than the average level of nearly 30 years, belonging to the year of low occurrence and small loss of disasters. In the emergency management of natural disasters, earth observation technology can provide valuable reference for the scientific response, disaster reduction and prevention of major natural disasters in the world. For example, China, in cooperation with relevant countries and international organizations, has actively participated in international emergency relief and post-disaster recovery and reconstruction efforts. It has played an important role in remote sensing monitoring, disaster assessment and emergency response of disasters such as tropical cyclone Yidai in Mozambique and earthquake and tsunami in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Since its launch in 2012, the Annual report on remote Sensing Monitoring of the Global Ecological Environment has focused on three major themes: typical elements of the global ecological environment, hot issues of the global ecological environment and key global regions. In seven phases, a total of 18 special reports have been released, including nine series, including the growth of terrestrial vegetation, the temporal and spatial distribution of land surface water area, the production situation of global bulk grain and oil crops, and the temporal and spatial distribution of global carbon sources and sinks. It provides a strong information support for dealing with global climate change and promoting regional sustainable development.
